Adventure sailing ratings

These ratings are written to give you a guideline as to what to expect on our trips and to ensure you are joining a trip that is appropriate to the type of sailing you enjoy. Of course the weather on the day often makes a significant difference to what we actually experience, hence this is only a guideline to what could be expected.

Please note that Kimochi is always manned appropriately for trips, so it is not necessarily the case that the higher the rating the higher the level of experience you need.

GREEN

  • Short sails of between 3-6 hours per day.
  • Only in daylight and in sheltered waters/ moderate coastal seas.
  • Generally stopping for all meals.
  • Only sailing in sheltered waters (i.e. rivers) in strong winds.
  • Overnights in secure harbours or anchorages, often with good facilities or shoreside attractions nearby.

BLUE

  • Moderate sails of between 4-8 hours per day on average.
  • Occasionally some early morning/ evening sailing to suit tides, but generally minimal sailing after darkness.
  • Lunch often had at sea.
  • Occasional sailing in coastal waters in strong winds (i.e around force 6), but generally trying to minimise if possible.
  • A mixture of overnight stops in secure harbours and anchorages with some facilities, but also some wilder and more remote anchorages where there are no facilities or civilisation nearby.

RED

  • Sailing an average of around 8 hours/ 40 miles per day, but most likely with some days much shorter and others longer to ensure time can be enjoyed ashore.
  • Mostly sailing during the day, but expect to have some early starts/ late finishes and some meals at sea.
  • Occasionally the potential for sailing through the night depending on the weather (you are encouraged to take part in watches with the skipper/ 1st mate, however this is not a requirement).
  • Potential of sailing for extended periods in offshore or exposed seas and around exposed headlands in strong winds (i.e. around force 6).
  • A mixture of overnight stops in secure harbours and anchorages with some facilities, but also many wilder and more remote anchorages where there are no facilities or civilisation nearby. Potential for some occasional swell/ increased boat movement in overnight stops.

BLACK

  • Sailing an average of around 8 hours/ 40 miles per day, but most likely with some days much shorter and others significantly longer to ensure time can be enjoyed ashore.
  • Mostly sailing during the day, but expect to have some early starts/ late finishes and some meals at sea.
  • Likely at least one through the night passage (you are encouraged to take part in watches with the skipper/ 1st mate, however this is not a requirement).
  • Increased likelihood of sailing for extended periods in offshore or exposed seas and around exposed headlands in strong winds (i.e. around force 6), and potentially higher at times.
  • A mixture of overnight stops in secure harbours and anchorages with some facilities, but also many wilder and more remote anchorages where there are no facilities or civilisation nearby. More potential for some swell/ increased boat movement in overnight stops.

If in any doubt as to the suitability of a trip for you please do get in touch. Richard is always very happy to talk through options to ensure you are matched to the best trip for you.
